Οι Αμερικανοί καταναλωτές βρήκαν άλλους τρόπους να ικανοποιήσουν την ανάγκη τους. Άρχισαν να κόβουν κομμάτια από T-shirt και μετά τα πέταγαν στην τουαλέτα, με αποτέλεσμα να βουλώνουν τα αποχετευτικά δίκτυα.
Χαρακτηριστικό είναι το παράδειγμα της πόλης Ρέντινγκ στην Καλιφόρνια, που προκειμένου να σταματήσει τους Αμερικανούς από αυτή την κακή συνήθεια, τοποθέτησε σχετικά μηνύματα σε φωτεινές οδικές πινακίδες. «Ρίξτε στη λεκάνη μόνο χαρτί τουαλέτας».
Το παράδειγμα της πόλης της Καλιφόρνια ακολούθησαν κι άλλες περιοχές στις ΗΠΑ, με τις σχετικές προειδοποιητικές αναρτήσεις στο Twitter και στα υπόλοιπα social media να παίρνουν φωτιά.
